Ornamental Red Crane Cabbage in a Container

I saw this Red Crane Cabbage at the grocery store and fell in love. Huge silvery green and purple rose-like blooms bowing from foot-tall stems. Come to mama.

Ornamental cabbage is a terrific annual for Pacific Northwest landscapes. It prefers the chill of fall and winter, so it's a great choice for adding color during the colder months. There are tons of varieties with shades of white and purple, frilly leaves or not, some perched atop long stems like the crane, but most sitting right on the ground. They can look especially impressive grouped together in masses.

I think this particular guy, though, would be cute in a container with mums and pansies. But I decided I like it so much, that it just needed to be by itself.

Well, maybe with a little surprise pumpkin tucked in at the base for Halloween.
