DIY Baking Cup Holders – Made out of Pringles Cans!
Saturday, March 19, 2011 in Crafts, Food, Home, Tools and Goodies

I love looking at throwaway items – something that’s junk or just plain garbage – and reimaginingthem as something else entirely. It’s my favorite form of creativity, and I’ve done it most my life. I’m not too proud to say I’m a little bit happy that this sort of thing (you know, “recycling,” I suppose) is “on trend” these days.
Makes me feel like a little bit less of a freak.
Apparently, Pringles cans are an endless source of inspiration for me. Much to my guy’s delight, who gives me that conflicted look of unabashed happiness and “aw crap, I won’t be able to control myself” whenever I come home with a can of sour cream and onion. He can polish off an entire can in a single sitting. Good thing, because I have an insatiable appetite for the containers. (And yes, I admit the chips aren’t bad either, though whole food it’s not).
So naturally, one recent sunny day (it’s always a sunny day when you have a great idea) I was paining over the fact that I have no safe, non-squishy place for all of my adorable cupcake liners.

They’re stuffed here and there, in our pantry and in my baking box (yes, I have a baking box, which is a problem to solve in and of itself). And I thought, *light bulb*! All of these bad boys would fit perfectly into a Pringles can. (AND, I’d probably have room for more cups after that! Bring on the Bake it Pretty shopping spree.)

So I brought a couple of cans home. My guy faithfully emptied them. And then we went to work.
First, we washed it out.
Then, my guy cut a very skinny little “viewing window” out of the side. He used the lettering on the can and some masking tape to ensure he had a straight line. He used a shipping knife. An exacto knife would likely work great, too.

I found a piece of scrapbook paper that I had laying around and liked well enough.
We cut the paper down to size, so that it would wrap around the can perfectly.

I sprayed the paper with spray adhesive and attached it to the can.
I then hot-glued some seam binding (had some laying around; ribbon would work even better) on the top and bottom. Hides any remaining Pringle can peaking through.
I used an exacto knife to cut the paper that was covering the viewing window.

And then slid my cupcake liners in there and tied some kitchen twine around the holder, attaching a tag so that I know what it’s holding. As if I’d forget! I’m obsessed with my cupcake liners. Love.
Love the new holder, too.

Covering the can with contact paper is even easier. I had some of this vintage aqua flower stuff laying around, so I went to town with another Pringles can.

Lower tech, this version has no viewing window, because it’s just holding paper cups.
I used rubber bands to conceal the seam at the top and bottom, a little jute and a tag and now my little paper cups have a home, too.
A Pringles can for everything, and everything in its Pringles can.

How clever! And cute. I love the idea, but I’m not a Pringles fan. Oh well. They look great!

Talk about reuse and recycle. These are lovely and they would make such great gifts!

Love this idea!! Right now I am using old tin lunch boxes but they aren’t enough. A pringles container would hold tons!!

Brilliant! Such a super idea and so creative! Recycle, recycle! I don’t think my husband’s going to complain if I suddenly start buying Pringles.

What a great idea! I think the viewing window is pure genius. I was wondering how you’d see what you want. I guess i have to run out and buy a few cans of Pringles. But first I need to work on getting a collection of cup cake holders.

I think its a very claver idea. We do not have to eat those pringles but we know people do and its a good way to recycle and reuse. Save on paper waste. I would use it. Would like to share some bakeware items that I came across recently http://gan.doubleclick.net/gan_click?lid=41000613802003338&pubid=21000000000396892
